Kratom Laboratory Testing Explained

Kratom Alkaloids Explained: It’s more than just Mitragynine

The plant mitragyna speciosa, more commonly known as kratom, naturally produces nitrogen-based chemicals called Alkaloids that can have pronounced physiological actions on humans.  While kratom produces over 40 known alkaloids, the most prevalent and researched are mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine, speciogynine, and paynantheine.  Mitragynine accounts for about 66% of the total alkaloid content in kratom.  It is primarily researched for its potential analgesic (pain relief) effects and for its potential antitussive, antidiarrheal, adrenergic, and antimalarial effects.  7-hydroxymitragynine accounts for less than 2% of the total alkaloid content and is most researched for its potentially powerful analgesic properties.  Both speciogynine and paynantheine account for about 15% of the total alkaloid content in kratom and are researched as potential muscles relaxers.  Other alkaloids that can be found in kratom include mitraphylline, ajmalicine, and isorhynchophylline which are researched for their potential as vasodilators, immunostimulants, and cerebrocirculants.

An important thing to keep in mind is that the alkaloids in kratom are very similar.  For example, there are two alkaloids found in kratom that are almost identical to mitragynine – speciociliantine and speciogynine.  These three alkaloids are comprised of three molecules that are almost exact copies of each other.  This makes it very hard for laboratories to tell them apart.  What that means is the percent of mitragynine is often times misrepresented by companies and labs. Only the best testing equipment can tell these alkaloids apart and analyze accurate percentages.

Kratom has other alkaloids that have similar potential medicinal properties to mitragynine such as 7-hydroxymitragynine and paynantheine. Both of these alkaloids are being researched for pain as well as other vastly beneficial properties. Mitragynine alone should not be used to decide what kratom to purchase. At ETHA, we test and analyze ALL known measurable kratom alkaloids.

Recent research and testing is being done to discover and understand other beneficial bio-active alkaloids in kratom. Some clinical trials have already shown medicinal benefits of other kratom alkaloids including ajmalicine, more commonly known as raubasine. Trials have demonstrated beneficial effects of ajmalicine against cognitive impairments and age-related cerebral disorders. It seems the more we test and analyze, the more alkaloids we find. That is why at ETHA Natural Botanicals, we are constantly improving our testing capabilities.

Not All Lab Results Are Created Equally

At ETHA Labs, we use well-established laboratory procedures to test our botanicals. We use solvent-extraction and purification techniques to analyze bulk plant alkaloids. We also partner with 3rd-party, independent testing laboratories to provide confidence and transparency in your botanical analysis. Our partner labs specialize in kratom analysis and help us to identify adulterants and heavy metals (lead) to ensure your kratom is safe. These labs utilize High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to analyze our botanicals. Testing done internally at ETHA Labs as well as through third-party, independent labs means you can trust ETHA kratom.

At ETHA, we have over 20+ years of R&D experience with Fortune 50 companies. We have also been extensively researching and testing botanicals such as kratom. We have discovered that not all labs will produce consistent results. Example, grinding the kratoms leaves finer will release more alkaloids and test higher than the same kratom that is course ground.

    Just my opinion.
    Personally speaking
I don’t trust collaborations with other companies for diversifying business model as with other products it usually compromises the integrity and loosens the will to continue doing the right thing to ensure consistent efficacy of product.
Once I know we’re here this is happening. I’m out

Hello! I wanted to reach out because it looks like alongside product testing, ETHA offers kratom products under your own brand. We (Global Widget) produce high-quality infused kratom gummies with 300mg of kratom extract/gummy. We sell these in the market under the brand Black Diamond but we also white and private label these products as well. With the gummy market set to double in the next 4 years, I thought there might be interest in bringing this product to market for ETHA. We can produce roughly 1.2mm gummies every day in our cGMP, FDA and OTC registered facility here in Tampa, FL.

Please let me know if this would be of interest and I’d be happy to slot time for a call/send samples for your team to evaluate.
