The Many Facets of Pain
Before addressing the relationship between pain and kratom, let us delve into the meaning of pain. Pain is an uncomfortable feeling that tells you something may be wrong. It can be steady, throbbing, sharp, pinching, or described in many other ways. Sometimes, it’s just a nuisance, while other times it can be debilitating. The classifications of pain are either acute or chronic. Acute pain is usually severe and short-lived and is often a signal that your body has been injured. Chronic pain ranges from mild to severe, is present for long periods of time, and is often the result of a disease that may require ongoing treatment. Most people treat pain by managing the symptoms.
While it is often dismissed as being less serious, emotional pain is very real and should be taken just as seriously as physical pain. Emotional pain can originate from non-physical sources. Sometimes this emotional distress is the result of the actions of others. Other times, it might be the result of stress, grief, or loss. In other cases, it might be the result of an underlying mental health condition such as depression or anxiety. No matter the cause, physical and psychological pain can be intense and significantly affect many different areas of your life.

Intricacies of Kratom
Kratom naturally produces nitrogen-based chemicals called alkaloids that can have pronounced physiological actions on humans. The kratom plant has over 40 such naturally occurring bio-active alkaloids, of which perhaps the most well-known is mitragynine. Traditionally, day laborers in Southeast Asian countries chewed on kratom leaves to help with pain and energy. Additionally, kratom was used as a local anesthetic and also used to help with coughs and with intestinal issues like diarrhea. According to a 2020 survey of nearly 3,000 kratom users by John Hopkins Medicine, these days, a large portion of kratom users are using kratom to self-treat pain, while others use it for emotional or mental conditions.
Mitragynine can make up the majority of the total alkaloid content in kratom. Researchers study it for its potential analgesic (pain relief) effects and for its potential antitussive, antidiarrheal, adrenergic, and antimalarial effects. While 7-hydroxymitragynine is in tiny amounts in the natural plant it garners much research for its potentially powerful analgesic properties. Two other major alkaloids are speciogynine and paynantheine. They are studied as muscle relaxers.
Other alkaloids in kratom include: mitraphylline, ajmalicine, and isorhynchophylline. They are researched for their potential as immunostimulants and cerebrocirculants.

Pain and Kratom
As mentioned above, pain has many facets such as physical pain, nerve pain, muscle tightness and even mental and emotional pain. It is very important to understand that kratom alone does not and will not cure, fix or permanently make pain go away. A regimen that may include exercise, clean diet, plenty of rest, a good social network of loved ones, and supplements is a holistic well-rounded approach to pain management. Kratom is a great addition to a comprehensive plan. It may temporarily alleviate pain, restore natural energy levels and motivation, and support rest, allowing you to get the other parts of a holistic health plan in motion.
